To enter Kohlberg & Company’s midtown Manhattan office is to encounter a distinctive and uncommonly handsome workplace— a modern, moody and masculine environment that speaks of expertise, integrity, strength and vision. It is an apt image. The 7,414-square-foot facility has been expressly designed by BR Design to give 25-30 employees of this private equity firm, founded in 1987 by Jerome Kohlberg, Jr., a co-founder of the prominent global investment company Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, a supportive environment for investing in such transactions as leveraged buyouts, privatization procedures and acquisitions of privately held businesses. With effectiveness and collegiality in mind, the firm’s workstations, private offices, conference/meeting rooms, collaborative spaces and café are configured as an open plan workplace. High quality materials, finishes and furnishings are subtly combined to create the desired ambience, incorporating natural woods, brass accents, solid surface waterfall countertops, accent tiles, fine fabrics, leathers and wallcoverings, elegant architectural lighting fixtures, and stylish contemporary furniture. There is design ingenuity as well, because ductwork, sprinklers and other overhead MEP components have been left exposed to emphasize ceiling height. Thanks to the skillful use of color and form, the ceiling suavely reinforces the office’s polished look with finesse even the client can admire.
